Mothers Union

MOTHERS’ UNION is an international Christian charity that seeks to support families worldwide. Our vision is of a world where God’s love is shown through loving, respectful and flourishing relationships and our mission is to demonstrate the Christian faith in action by the transformation of communities worldwide through the nurture of the family in its many forms.

Here at St. Nicholas’ Church, Shepperton, as many as are able of our 29 caring, supportive, friendly members meet on the second Tuesday of each month where after sharing in the Eucharist in Church we adjourn to the Parish Centre. Despite having no official ‘Leader’ for the past few years, the Committee of seven members endeavour to arrange a varied programme of discussions, speakers, a shared supper evening each summer and at Christmastide, plus outings to places of interest (our most recent being Guildford Cathedral as it celebrated its 50th anniversary). Each year we make around 250 posies for the Mothering Sunday morning services and at evening worship at our local Care Home, host and prepare the Marriage Preparation Suppers, and have also acquired a reputation for successful Car-Booting in our fund-raising efforts. Most members are of course involved in other aspects of church life here at St. Nicholas, such as The Mothers’ & Toddlers’ Group, the Choir, The Parish Centre Team and the Church Flower Group.

Along with our fellow branches in the Deanery we currently support two main projects, the first being ‘Furnish’ which provides household equipment to people being re-housed after a period of homelessness. We collect bedding, towels and kitchen crockery and utensils throughout the year, then pack these into the provided boxes in the form of Starter Packs for purchase from the main depot at a token charge. A new venture has evolved from our recent connection with Bronzefield Women’s Prison. We provide each new inmate with a pack of basic toiletries and collect good second-hand clothing of all sizes. Last December we met to sign 600 Christmas cards, one for each inmate. We are delighted to have the opportunity of supporting such locally based projects in addition to our worldwide and hope to build further on this work.

If this sounds intriguing, do come along to one of our meetings where a very warm welcome awaits you, age and marital status being quite immaterial.
